There are several things
to consider when initially designing a web site and generally
they are :-
Layout
Do you already have an
idea of what you want your site to look like? Do you have
any favourite sites? What about those particular sites appeals
to you? Do you have a current brand or logo? Will you need
a logo or brand? Will you need a banner and button links to
your site that will need to be created in the initial design
of your web site? Do you have an idea of which colours you
want to use for the backgrounds, border, buttons, links and
text?
If your site is easy to
navigate, then visitors will stay longer and are more likely
to return again to your site. A uniform look across pages
helps visitors to feel comfortable. Will your site have a
lot of graphics or will it be an informative text site? How
do you want to display your products/services?
Aim
What do you want your
web site to do for you? Is your aim to have an e-commerce
site? Will you sell products online? Will the site be promoting
a service? What demographic of visitors do you hope to attract(your
'target audience')? Are you looking to advertise?
Selling
Will your site sell anything?
Do you already have a merchant account? Would you like to
set up an online international merchant account to accept
credit cards and e-cheques? How will you accept order payments
for your online products? Will you need a 'shopping cart'?
What sales and government taxes apply? Do you need to ship
orders to customers? What is your policy on returns, faults
and damages? What guarantee can you give your customers regarding
the goods they are ordering? To accept credit cards you need
access to a 128bit security setup online, do you currently
have access to this high level of security for your customers?
Content
What are you going to
say? What do people want to hear? Do you want an interactive
site? Do you want music/sound? Do you need a mailing list
to inform visitors of changes to your site? Will you be updating
your site content or aspects of it on a regular basis? Do
you want a Guest Book? Do you want a Message Board? How will
you encourage visitors to return to your site? Competitions
and/or freebies are a good way to attract return customers
to your site.
Links
Links to other sites are
great for getting your site listed in the Top 10 search engines
and directories. The more "hits" or "visitors"
to your site, the more prominent your web site will be in
a customers search of the World Wide Web. You can not link
to ANY other site without that sites permission. Do you want
a separate page for your links? Do you want the links shown
at the bottom of your page? Other sites may wish to link to
you. Do you want to offer a free banner or button link for
them to display on their page?
Promoting Your Site
You will have to consider
advertising. Whether it is banner advertising or another form
of advertising online. An online business is just the same
as any other business. You need to get out there and promote
your site. Newspaper advertising in your local area may be
necessary to get things moving. You will need business cards
and other promotional material. One of the beneficial aspects
to the Internet is that news travels fast - really fast! So
how will you promote your site? Do you already have an audience
or will you need to create one by relying on advertising and
search engine submissions?
Feedback
One of the most important
qualities in a site is feedback. You need to provide responses
to visitors and clients comments. You need to provide this
response no later than 48 hours after a submission. An email
acknowledgment is re-assuring to visitors, especially if you
can't respond straight away, whether it's a technical question
or a huge corporate client. You also need to treat all inquiries
with courtesy and expedience. If you
will not be able to address all incoming orders and mail,
Reall Solutions can help you out as part of our maintenance
fees.
